December 2017

The year in revue

Looking back over this year is not a pleasant task.  This past year has seen my husband at death's door, but thankfully, he is now back with us and his health is not too bad.  He has no more operations planned so here is hoping.  I had 4 operations myself in the last year and that has really put a dent in my planning.  That list for this year is full of not completes or failures and it was such a short list.

But on the up side I did get to the Houston Quilt Show in the USA and took some wonderful workshops.  And the highlight of the year was my trip to Guatemala.

The operations have seen an improvement in my health, with me being able to bend over without pain for the first time in over 20 years.  As far as the textile projects went it was an average year with lots of volunteering work and a bit of teaching thrown in.  And I do now have a base in the city with the purchase of the apartment so that is also a positive.

So looking at the good and the bad I think the scales are on the positive side.  One can't ask for much more than that.  Now I have to think about what I want for 2018.

Having got through this year it can only be up.

The days inbetween

Not much work done here at all.  Sewing that is.  Lots of cooking and building toys.  Swimming at the beach, visiting extras, cleaning, washing and all that goes with 15 extras plus loads of other visitors.  One day I made 250 sausage rolls, with about 10 left over.  Then a triple measure of picklets with jam and cream, non left over.  One night I did 3 chickens, a lamb, beef and pork roast plus vegetables and salads and dessert.  Enough left for sandwiches the next day.

There are little children everywhere.  The eldest is about 9 and the youngest 18 months.  That all adds up to an incredible noise level and mess.  Trying to keep the sand out of the house is a losing battle.

But this is what memories are made of.  Not lots of expensive toys or eating out all the time.  It is shared time with family and friends.  Exhausting but precious.

Christmas Rituals

The ginger bread house has been made and consumed.  This year Jasmine decided it needed 3 bears outside.

We also made lots of gingerbread people who all disappeared with the shout of ,

"off with their heads."  (Notice no more braces the front teeth are straight.)

Jasmine has a real thing for reindeer this year so we had to make some of those, which couldn't be eaten, yet.

The first of the families arrived last night and we got them into a holiday rental, there were an extra 7 I couldn't handle.  It is hot, humid and there is rain around and the ants have gone mad.  I am out with the spray trying to secure the house against them.  If the rain keeps up my back verandah is going to be over loaded with people.  Still that is Xmas.

A bit steep!

My daughter borrowed my kayak and little while ago and took it down the track to the beach which is opposite our house.

She said there were no problems getting it up and down the track.  So today I though I would try that instead of walking around the road to the barge ramp.  Bad mistake!!  The track is super steep and the local kids have set it up to ride their bikes down so they can attempt to kill themselves.

I wanted to go to the beach this way because I knew I was going to have trouble getting in and out of the kayak and I didn't want people laughing at me.  As it was there was an old boatie who has pulled his boat up on the beach to clean the bottom.  He nearly fell off his boat laughing at me.  I just couldn't get it up the hill and in the end it took 2 of us to get it home.  I will never believe my daughter again when it comes to physical challenges.  Easy for her difficult for me.

I also have been out to lunch with my old teaching buddies.  They served the most beautiful dessert.  It was a Pavlova to share.

This is going to be on the Christmas menu.

Thoughts on stitching in 2018

I see that Sharron has put up a piece about TAST in 2018 and I think that I will join the "Beyond TAST Challenge."

I first started with TAST back in 2009 but didn't get very far.  It wasn't until 2011 that I became serious about exploring the stitches and made sure that I did a piece every week.  It was a great learning experience, not so much in learning new stitches but in exploring what I could do with those stitches.

Screen Shot 2017-12-19 at 7.53.42 pm

In the past I have used this exercise to build a folio of what I can do with certain stitches but this time I think I will used this activity to design embroidered boxes.  I have been looking at a number of French blogs that have featured embroidered boxes and I like the work of Lea Stansal and wonder if I couldn't take this in another direction.

Or I could play it safe and work on a fabric book.  I think it will be boxes.  I will have to look at the challenge first me thinks!

I am not unpicking it.  I know there is a mistake but I will use that as a learning experience for the students.  Now I just have to work out how I can correct it?  Just one counting mistake in one row and I should pull out more than half this piece!

That time of year

Time has caught up with me and I am way behind on where I wanted to be and other commitments keep crowding in on meYesterday was probably my last day of sewing until after the New Year.  Now that is a scarey when I think about what I want to get done.  I have family and friends moving over to the island from Xmas Day right through to New year and most are staying here with me!  Fiveteen extra people in the house makes for a lot of work.  My sewing room will be taken over as a dorm. for the kids.  Blow up matresses right up the middle. Still that is what Xmas is about.  Sharing your time with family and friends.  I hope the weather stays fine and they spend most of their time at the beach.

My daughter in law has found a great way to introduce the girls to skating. I didn't think this was ice but it is. Those penguins are a wonderful way to learn how to balance.

Sometimes you fall over though.

It's a bit like Xmas

I put in orders for supplies for some of my 2018 classes and unexpectedly some have started to arrive.  I wasn't expecting to see these until well into January or even February as I had ordered them from China.

It makes learning how to insert zippers so much more interesting when you have zippers that our a bit different.

Screen Shot 2017-12-16 at 6.17.40 am

I'm going to have to buy some more of these as I can think of lots of things I could use them in for myself!

Just checking

That is what I did yesterday.  Dropped into the discount fabric shop to just check what was there.  I'm afraid it was much of the same old, same old, but I found some fabric that was reduced in price and although I'm not sure what I will use it for now, I know it will be just perfect to use in teaching projects next year.

I try to keep the prices of my kits reasonable and sometimes you have to use less than ideal fabrics to do this.  But not this lot!  It is so bright and colourful that it makes me smile.

This will be perfect for a Children's Class.

These will make great bags for using zippers.

Amazing that a bit of fabric can make me feel so good.
