Week 20 Bullion Knot Stitch
I often use this stitch but it isn't one of my favourites, there are other stitches I would much prefer. It has it's place however.
I looked up the meaning of the word Bullion and it means the storage of precious metals, usually as bars but it can also be stamped into coins. These coins are not for commercial usage, rather they are for investment.
That got me thinking about just what value we place on precious metals and how little on our environment. As embroiderers we use the environment as a source of inspiration, but how much value do we really place on it?
I have used a piece of an old doily as my background fabric, to this I have glued images of gold bullion in the form of coins and edged them with machine stitching in gold thread. On a separate piece of linen I have stitched a representation of gold coins, using a perle thread. The rolled edge is bullion stitch, the centre back stitch. I then cut them out and applied them to the embroidery to give a 3D effect. I have tried to put the two elements, bullion (money) and nature in the same frame and ask the question which is of greater value?

Thank you for a great post!
It was interesting to read and learn, and to reflect. You are so right in that needlework often gets its inspiration from nature, and that is a perfect reason for us to give the value of nature and environmental care much more thought.
You have worked your beautiful embroidery with great creativity.
